Our history

From a small beginning in solar investments to a global renewable energy platform.

Our story began in 2008, when Obton was founded by entrepreneurs Anders Marcus and Peter Krogsgaard Jørgensen with a simple idea: to give investors access to the growing opportunity in solar energy. Just one year later, Obton made its first investment in a solar PV plant. In 2011, we launched our first investment fund, focused on solar projects in Italy. From there, the business continued to grow – across markets, technologies and the renewable energy value chain.

As the business expanded internationally, local presence became an increasingly important part of the model. Obton established teams and local entities in several markets, building knowledge of local regulations, energy markets, projects and stakeholders. This created a network of local expertise across countries while maintaining the scale and capabilities of an international organisation.

Solar remained at heart

Over the following years, Obton evolved from an investment provider into a business with deep expertise across renewable energy. Solar remained at the heart of the company, while activities expanded to include wind, battery storage and project development. Along the way, we built capabilities spanning project development, acquisitions, construction, financing, asset management and operations.

As the renewable energy market matured, so did the way we saw the future of the business. Increasingly, we saw the value of bringing assets, people and capabilities together in a more integrated and active ownership model.

In 2025, three Obton funds – Obton Solenergi Stabil, Obton Solenergi Master Impact and Obton Solenergi Fond 1 – were brought together with selected activities, assets and people from Obton. The ambition was to create an integrated renewable energy company with its own organisation and capabilities across much of the value chain.

Merger completed

The merger was completed in 2025, creating Renewable Energy Company A/S, a new platform with approximately 1.2 GWp of installed solar capacity and a 4.1 GWp development pipeline across 11 markets.

For a short period, Renewable Energy Company was the name of our new company. It was always intended as a temporary project name while the new organisation was being established. As the integration progressed, the need for a permanent identity became clear, one that reflected the company we had become and the direction we were heading.

In June 2026, our shareholders approved the new name: engira.

Today, engira builds on the experience, assets, people and local presence developed over more than 15 years. We combine local expertise with an international platform, allowing us to stay close to our assets and markets while sharing knowledge, capabilities and experience across the organisation.

Our history is rooted in solar energy. Our future is about building on that foundation: developing, owning, operating and optimising renewable energy assets to create long-term value.

The name is new. The foundation is not. And the next chapter has begun.

We are building on our experience to create a stronger platform for long-term value and the future of renewable energy.
